Nearly 60 girl students of the Indian Institute of Crafts and Design (IICD) are staging a sit-in outside the college after they were “forcibly” thrown out by the director of the institute from the hostel on Saturday. The institute was run on a public private partnership.

IICD director Satish Bhardwaj had issued a notice on Thursday asking all girls in hostels to vacate it by Saturday 3pm without giving any reason. Most of them had come from different places to join the new session last week only.

The matter came up before the State Commission for Women (SCW) which had sent a letter to chief secretary C K Mathew to put a stay on directors’ order but went in vain.

“Officials came at 3 pm and started throwing out our luggage. Finally, we all came out,” said a student on condition of anonymity.

Chairperson of the women’s commission, Lad Kumari Jain, said, “The order issued by the director was purely intended to cause inconvenience to the girls. It seems to be a revengeful act as the girls had made complaint against him.”

The girls had entered their hostel on May 26 at 10pm from the back door much to the chagrin of the director.

She added that the commission then summoned the director who testified before it saying that he along with two others went to repair the cooler which was not working. “We found his statement weird and cross-examined his statement with the students which didn’t match,” Jain said.

Till the last report came in, the girls were staging sit in outside the college. They were joined by PUCL activists lead by Kavita Srivastava who termed the incident as “uncivilized” and urge the government to react on the issue before it’s too late.
