With the increasing numbers of crimes on woman these days , Rajasthan state seems to have more numbers of juveniles in rape cases. Even as the Union cabinet recently cleared a proposal which will empower the Juvenile Justice Board to decide whether a juvenile above 16 years involved in heinous crimes such as rape is to be sent to an observation home or tried in a regular court, Rajasthan reports alarming number of cases in which juveniles are in conflict with the law.

As a juvenile’s involvement in Nirbhaya gang rape case led to an outcry across the nation, in Rajasthan 183 juveniles were accused of rape in 2013, according to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).

With 347 cases of rape registered against juveniles, Madhya Pradesh stands at number 1 position in the country followed by Maharashtra with 197 cases and Uttar Pradesh with 196 cases. Rajasthan is ahead of even Delhi considered to be the rape capital of India where 134 cases of rapes were registered against juveniles.

The changes in the law proposed by the union cabinet come against the backdrop of outrage over the lighter punishment of three years in a reform home given to a minor convicted in the December 16, 2012 Delhi gang-rape case.
