With second spell of monsoon in the district the Anasagar lake – situated in the heart of the city – is almost overflowing. The water gauge here on Monday touched 12 feet. The capacity of the lake is 13 feet. Besides Anasagar, half a dozen lakes in the district have been receiving water in the last 48 hours. However, the main holy lake of Pushkar is not full and is still below 8 feet.
In the first spell of rain when the water gauge was over 12 feet, the district administration opened the channel gates to release water. As the water flowed into Anasagar, the only river of Ajmer – Luni also started and its basements are having water discharge from the different sources of Aravilli hills.
Since June 1, the district has received an average of 209.66 mm rains in which Narayan Sagar region had the highest with 360 mm of rain. The city received 204 mm of water in the last two months while the lowest has been in Govindgarh block, which has received only 36 mm of rain so far. Monsoon showers, mostly in rural parts of Gegal, Pisangan, Arai, Jawaja, Sarwar and surrounding regions, have not disappointed the farmers who are happy that they can sow in their fields. The monsoon season is good for harvesting pulses in the major areas of the district.
The Narayan Sagar dam received 1.10 meter of water. Foisager lake received 12.5 feet of water. Lakes like Shiv Sagar Nyara, Makerda, Man Sagar, Rajiawas and Deh Sagar also received water. and the flow is still continuing.
There are 26 lakes with the irrigation department and officials are hopeful that with one or two good showers these lakes will receive water.
However, Pushkar lake which was dug and from which silt was removed three years ago does not have much water. Water channels from Kharkheri and Savitri hills were constructed to bring sthe rain water to this lake. The programme was started in national lake conversion scheme and silt was removed to increase the depth of this holy lake to 27 feet. “Last year 24 feet of water was received during monsoon but it reduced to 4 feet in summers,” said the local people.
At present Pushkar lake has 7.8 feet of water with 174 mm rains in last two months. “The water level in first phase of rain went above 8 feet and then reduced to 5 feet last week. Again with the second spell of monsoon the water level increased but it is not sure that the lake will be able to retain water for long,” said sources.
