UAV, 8 Helicopters for BSF in Jaisalmer border

To strengthen the border security force (BSF), an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) will soon be included for guarding the western border adjoining Pakistan, said BSF director general Subhash Joshi, who was in Jaisalmer for inaugurating new building of BSF sector north. He added that by next year, eight helicopters from Russia will be purchased, the training of pilots for which has started.

“A plan of Rs 4,000 crore has been made for the modernization of BSF and Rs 1,000 crore will be received next year. New weapons, explosives and equipment are being included and in next five years, BSF will become the most modern force,” he said.

To strengthen the air wing, eight new helicopters will be purchased from Russia by next September. These will be deployed at Gujarat, Rajasthan, Tripura and Assam border. Each battalion will be given new arms and surveillance equipments. To strengthen the firing capacity, a new firing range for each battalion is being made.

With regard to the increase in intrusion efforts by terrorists from Pakistan border in Jammu Kashmir, Joshi said, “BSF is totally alert and each effort of intrusion is being foiled and many firing incidents from Pak side were given a fitting reply.”

He further said that the process for forming new battalions was on. This year, four new battalions have been made and next year three more battalions will be established.

Responding to the question on jawans leaving BSF, he said, “BSF is celebrating 2013 as Jawans’ Year under which scholarships are being given to the children of BSF jawans along with education loans on lower interest rates. Also, schools and guest houses are being constructed. BSF has made cricketer Virat Kohli as its brand ambassador and soon he would visit the border areas and would boost the morale of the jawans.”

“Apart from this, five year plan of Rs 3,300 crore is being made in which there would be provisions for building new battalions and office buildings and facilities at border outposts. This year, a scheme has been made to carry drinking water to 17 border outposts by March 31, 2014,” said the BSF DG.

Taking question on cyber crime, Joshi said, BSF is not much affected by them yet they has their own IT wing and a separate cell to keep an eye on such crimes.
