Transport Nagar underpass causing traffic jam

The construction work at the Transport Nagar Underpass is moving at a snail’s pace, thus causing a lot of problems to the public at large.

The Jaipur Development Authority’s engineers had started the construction work for the 500 meter long underpass connecting Delhi Road via Ghat Ki Guni tunnel with MI road in May 2011 with the aim to ease flow of vehicular traffic.

Ever since the project was launched, the speed of civil works has remained below average. This despite the fact that UDH minister Shanti Dhariwal, in the last one-and-half years having inspected the site, along with JDA officers and directing them to speed up the works.

The minister’s directions, however, seems to have fallen on deaf ears and the project failed to meet the set deadline of June 2012. Later, the deadline was extended to May 2013.

The delay is causing a lot of trouble to the public as the vehicles moving towards Ghat ki Guni Road are forced to take a long U-turn whereas the vehicles coming from Ghat ki Guni have to take a turn from Jawahar Nagar Road at the Tunnel end.

It may be noted that the JDA had not taken up any big infrastructure projects like construction of flyover or underpass in the past two years in order to just focus on completion of the current projects. Despite this the authority failed to complete some long pending projects on time including the Transport Nagar Underpass.

The construction cost of the underpass was estimated to be around Rs30 crore and it aimed to reduce congestion in the area especially caused by light vehicles.

According to JDA sources, the deadline will be met as some finishing works are pending. “The road concrete and plaster works on the retaining walls is pending. It will take a week’s time or so and the underpass will be dedicated to the public soon,” said a JDA officer. He also clarified that the authority alone is not responsible for the delay. “The discom could not shift power cables on time thus delaying the project,” he added.
