Special prayers were offered and threads of ‘mannat’ were tied on Friday at the dargah of Khawaja Moinuddin Chishti here for actor Sanjay Dutt, whose conviction was upheld by the Supreme Court on Thursday. Devotees believed that Dutt will get relief in his review petition or through some other options.
Dutt and his family are regular visitors to the shrine and many also pray for them. “Sunil Dutt and Nargis were regular visitors to the dargah and Sanjay followed them,” said Sayed Quttubuddin Sakhi, khadim (priest) of the Dutt family.
Devotees mostly from Maharashtra, West Bengal and from other states came forward on Friday to tie threads of mannat near jannati darwaza to pray for Sanjay Dutt. “He has already been punished for his deeds and he has realized his mistake,” said one of the devotees.
Sanjay Dutt came to the dargah the last time in 2011. At that time, he flew down to Jaipur on a chartered plane and by road to Ajmer. He offered prayers and chadder at the dargh. “He was happy and said he had changed totally and understood the meaning of life,” Sakhi said.
The actor came to dargah first time alone in 2006. “Once he had accompanied his father and in 2008 he came with his sister Priya Dutt,” Sakhi said, adding that the actor prayed for success in Bollywood and once said he wanted to be like his father.
