In a major decision North-Western Railway (NWR) has decided the construction of a skywalk connecting the Metro station and the city railway station. Its a JMRC proposal to construct a skywalk and NWR also submitted a conceptual plan to the JMRC.
The proposed skywalk will give Metro passengers direct access to the railway platforms. According to the officials, after several discussions recently the North Western Railway (NWR) has approved the proposal.
Tarun Jain, chief public relations officer, (NWR), said, “The conceptual plan has been submitted to the JMRC for approval. Suggestions have been sought in this regard.”
The expected cost of the walkway is Rs 6.7 crores and it would be approximately 500 meters long. It is expected to be the largest skywalk in the city. For passengers’ convenience, the NWR has approved to open a ticket counter in between the skywalk and to deploy a train ticket examiner. Similarly, Metro will also open its counters there.
JMRC chairman and managing director N C Goel said, “The project has been planned as multiple modes of transport are the need of the hour. It would save lots of parking space and passengers’ time.” He added, “The proposal will now be examined to seek financial approval from the state government. The funds are expected to be released within this month.”
According to officials, as per initial designs, the skywalk connected Metro railway station and the foot over bridge constructed above railway platform number 1, 2and 3. “The railway officials were apprehensive to give a nod due to security concerns. In other cities too, the Metro walkways do not give direct access to the railway platforms,” an official said.
JMRC claims that if the model is successfully implemented, it will be replicated near Sindhi Camp bus stand too in future. “It would be lot more easier for passengers carrying reserve tickets as they will not have to walk down to the platform for the tickets. After the constructions of the skywalk, passengers also don’t have to climb up and down several times with heavy luggage,” said a JMRC official.
