The Election Commission on Saturday issued notification for re-polling at three polling stations in Barmer-Jaisalmer constituency and one in Churu seat, which would be held on Monday.
The decision came a day after BJP rebel and Independent candidate Jaswant Singh filed a complaint to the EC against chief minister Vasundhara Raje for misusing the government machinery to help the BJP candidate. In the compliant, he alleged that police and administration of both districts have helped the BJP candidate and requested for re-polling in three booths.
While the order hints at a misuse of government machinery, officially the EC maintains that the re-polling has been ordered because of a technical fault in the EVMs of these polling booths. However, the decision was also taken following reports of entry of unauthorised persons inside two polling booths in Barmer constituency.
Both Barmer and Churu are considered to be seats where the BJP views the contest as a prestige issue. Jaswant Singh, who stands expelled from the party, chose to contest as an Independent after he was denied a ticket from Barmer. The contest between party’s candidate Col Sonaram and Jaswant Singh has made headlines. Similarly, in Churu, the party chose to field Rahul Kaswan instead of his father and sitting MP Ram Singh Kaswan.
