Auto-lifters had a field day in Jaipur as they struck in various areas of the city and stole over two dozen vehicles in the past 24 hours.

Interestingly, most of the vehicles were lifted from Jaipur-east district. Jaipur-west recorded the second highest vehicle lifting incidents as seven vehicles were lifted here followed closely by South with five incidents and Jaipur-North reporting three auto thefts.

A closer look at the past incidents show how auto-lifters prefer Jaipur-East over any other part of city. Vehicle thefts alone amount to half the value of goods stolen from Jaipurites.

Police records show carjacking and vehicle-lifting alone account for 44% of the total amount ‘lost’ in thefts.

In 2011, total 2,839 vehicles were lifted in Jaipur and Jaipur-East recorded the most 1,535 theft cases. Moreover, in 2012 over 4,000 vehicles were stolen from Jaipur and here again Jaipur-east maintained its dubious distinction by recording a whooping 2,113 vehicle thefts.

Simply put, 10 vehicles were lifted every day from city in 2012. According to estimates, vehicles stolen from Jaipur in 2012 valued at Rs15 crore. “The auto-lifters prefer East district since it is an open land with little interference to stop the thieves.

“Moreover, though auto-lifting is now an organised crime, it is not recognised by law as organised activity rather as property theft. Thieves once caught, get bail easily,” said a senior cop.
