The engagement ceremony, known as the ‘Tilak Shrifal Dastoor’, is a ceremony, during which the bride’s father, her brother and other close male relatives brought the ’tilak’ for the groom from Patna Balangir. In this ceremony, only the men from the bride’s side participate while all from the groom’s side are present.
This ceremony is so called because, according to tradition, the bride’s brother applies a tilak on the groom’s forehead which makes the alliance or engagement official. A sword, clothes, fruits, sweets and other presents are offered to the groom.
The event marked the beginning of the festivities for Lakshyaraj’s wedding with Nivritti Kumari on January 21.
