Rajasthan industrial advancement is continues to be in dark as state has only 3.8% of total factories in India. As per the provincial figures released in a government survey, there has been an addition of just 272 factories from year 2010-11 to 2011-12 in Rajasthan and ranks behind Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh.

According to annual survey of industries (ASI) released on January 2013, Rajasthan continues to hold 8th position in the country. Gujarat accounts for more than 10% of the total factories and stands fourth. Uttar Pradesh has also performed well and is home to 14090 factories.

For Rajasthan the percentage has decreased from 2009-10 when it had a share of 4.2%. It then came to 3% the next year and remained stagnant in 2011-12.

Other than being less in number the factories also failed to generate much employment. All the industries counted in the survey employed merely 3.5 lakh people directly and 4.7 lakh indirectly. On the progress scale too the state’s growth was rather stagnant when all other neighboring states moved up on the ladder.

“The situation is still not conducive for industrialization in Rajasthan. The units which are operating are closing down and looking for elsewhere. The figures will remain discouraging unless we get full support and cooperation from the government,” said Tarachand Choudhary, president of the factories in Vishwakarma Industrial Area.

However, officials claim that Rajasthan, which is marred by many geographical barriers, is now surging ahead in industrialization. “When you compare the state with Gujarat then this should be kept in mind that don’t have a port and industrial cities of Haryana and UP fall in national capital region (NCR),” said an official of bureau of investment promotion.
