A house under construction at Manu Nagar near Bajri Mandi in Karni Vihar locality collapsed in heavy rain on Sunday, injuring at least 11 labourers. Though the labourers as well as two kids got trapped in the debris, timely arrival of police and help extended by local people saved them.

According to Kanhaiya Lal, circle inspector, Karni Vihar, the incident took place at 1.45 pm at a house where construction was going on at the second floor. “At least a dozen labourers were working at the site when the roof of the second floor collapsed on the labourers. After this the entire house also collapsed. Eleven labourers were trapped under the debris,” said Kanhaiya Lal.

He added that with the help of locals and civil defence team, all the injured were taken out in an hour’s time. “Three of the injured sustained grave injuries and were admitted to SMS hospital. The others sustained minor injuries,” said the officer. All the injured belong to Shyopur in Madhya Pradesh and were working as daily labourers.

“The injured included two children – Sunil (8) and Anil (5) – and a woman Mana (29),” the officer added. “We were working on the second floor when suddenly the roof collapsed. Later we found ourselves under the debris,” said Dheeraj one of the victims.

Police have registered a case of negligence against the landlord and the contractor of the house. “It is yet to be investigated if the house was constructed as per the map approved by the civic authorities concerned or it was illegal. Prima facie it appears that heavy rain was the main cause of the accident,” said an officer.
