Five men, two of them armed with a gun and a knife robbed a jeweller of gems worth over Rs 1 crore and escaped with the booty after gagging and tying the victim to a chair in the afternoon at Moti Doongri’s Deepak Marg area on Monday.
Police are focusing on a man who had been making business deals with the victim for the past eight years. The suspect had visited the victim on pretext of buying gems and reportedly committed the crime with four others.
The dacoity took place at RK Jewellers belonging to Raman Agrawal. “The shop is situated on the first floor of a building. Around noon, one P Singh alias Pawan came to the shop with another man and said they wanted to purchase gems and jewellery in huge quantity as his friend was planning to open a new jewellery showroom,” said a police officer.
The officer added that Pawan, who claimed to be from Udaipur, was in touch with Agrawal for the past eight years.
“So Agrawal trusted Pawan. Pawan left the shop saying that they would return after lunch and the jeweler should keep the jewellery items ready,” said the officer.
The officer added that Pawan gave Agarwal a missed call around 4 pm and again visited the shop with the same man around 5.30 pm. “They pretended to select jewellery items and put them in different bags. Suddenly three more men barged into the shop. One of them pointed a gun at Agrawal. They tied him to a chair after gagging him and then they escaped after bolting the door from outside,” said the officer.
In a hurry to leave the place, the robbers had not tied up the jeweller properly, so he managed to free himself. He shouted for help and was soon rescued by neigbouring shop owners. Agrawal then informed the police and his relatives. Police said that a search has been launched for Pawan.
