Sixteen years after Jaisalmer entered Bollywood’s limelight with ‘Border’, director J P Dutta will shoot again in the district to make a sequel of the blockbuster.
Sources privy to the making of ‘Border 2’ said the shooting will start from October in Jaisalmer’s Shahgarh Bulj and Samba sector in Jammu and Kashmir. The story will revolve around the 1971 Indo-Pakistan war and the acts of gallantry medal winner Subedar Prayag Singh of Jaisalmer and his commander Param Vir Chakra winner (posthumous) Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal of the Army’s armoured regiment, 17 Poona Horse.
Prayag Singh, a resident of Sankada area here, has retired from the Army and come back recently from Jammu and Kashmir after he was called through his former unit by the production team of ‘Border 2’. Prayag Singh said he had given a detailed briefing of the war his unit fought to the production team.
According to Prayag Singh, on December 16, 1971, he along with his commander Khetarpal, gunner Nathu Singh and tank operator Nand Singh brought down 10 tanks of Pakistan army in Bamnu area of Samba sector. Prayag Singh recalled that his unit was on a Centurion Tank made by US and they were badly hit in the fight. During the exchange of fire, their tank was hit by four mortars and a close-range fire from a Pakistani tank. Operator Nand Singh died on the spot during the tank fire, while badly injuring Khetarpal. He and gunner Nathu Singh were also injured during the incident, but they managed to divert their damaged tank to a safe place. Prayag Singh said Khetarpal breathed his last after drinking some water.
For the filming of ‘Boder 2’, sources said J P Dutta has signed Sunny Deol and Suniel Shetty, however, Akshaye Humar is not on board. All three were had leading roles in ‘Border’.
