He was suffering from jaundice after being hit by hepatitis E virus. His sudden demise has not only shocked the music lovers of Bikaner but has also shattered the whole music industry.

29-year-old Sandeep was admitted to PBM hospital, Bikaner on December 7 when he had complained of stomach ache. However, when his condition deteriorated further, the doctors advised his family to go to Gurgaon’s Medanta. He breathed last at 9am on Sunday.

A native of Bikaner, Sandeep had won accolades from the state and Bikaner administration in 2006 when he won Indian Idol 2. His albums include Mere Saath Sara Jahan (2006), Teri Sajani (2009), Woh Pehali Baar (2006) and Meharban (2009) and he also sang for the film Do Dilon Ke Khel Mein. He was settled in Mumbai and was struggling to establish himself as a playback singer from 2006.

Sandeep is survived by his wife and a one-month-old daughter. His last rites will be performed in Bikaner on Monday. The Acharya family lives at their ancestral house situated at Bikaner’s Sheetla gate locality.

Sandeep’s father Vijay Acharya was shattered and broken. “It was just a stomach ache that became a complication. What to say? He got married just last year on November, 30, 2012 and has a little daughter of one month,” he told TOI over the phone.

Not in a position to speak much, Vijay said, “His condition kept deteriorating after he had complained of stomach ache. He had come to visit us and to attend a marriage ceremony on December 10.”

Raja Hasan, another singer from Bikaner, who earned name and fame from talent hunt show Sa Re Ga Ma, was in tears when TOI broke the news to him. “I will have to rush for Bikaner now. I will reach Jaipur and reach his home by road. I was in constant touch with his brother Akshay and father. They were assuring me that everything would be fine,” Hasan said.

Talking about his friendship with Sandeep, Hasan said, “I met him during 2001 when I used to sing in a local orchestra. When I heard him singing in a village, I was stunned to see his talent. There was a time when we use to get Rs 300-450 per show.”

“He had purchased a new car some months ago. That’s when he invited me to drive. He was a very down to earth and deep rooted person. I am yet to believe that he has died of jaundice,” Hasan added.

Famous singer Sonu Nigam, who was also a judge in Indian Idol, expressed his grief when he tweeted saying, “Sandeep Acharya died? Oh my God… anyone knows how? I’m so so sad. What a beautiful soul.” He further tweeted, “Jaundice? Gosh. .. very sad. The boy was just 29… this year… Oh God, is only about deaths I feel. God give his parents some strength.”
