A magisterial court in Gandhinagar sent Asaram Bapu, whose police remand in connection with the sexual assault case lodged against him by a Surat-based girl got over on Tuesday, to judicial custody.
Subsequently, he was taken back to Jodhpur in Rajasthan by the SIT, which is conducting the probe. Asaram is facing another case of sexual assault in Jodhpur.
On Tuesday, following the completion of his remand period, Ahmedabad police produced him before the magisterial court presided over by V A Budh. Following Asaram’s production, the Special Public Prosecutor in the case — R C Kodekar — moved an application to keep him at Nadiad jail in the eventuality of keeping him in Gujarat for security reasons. “The court rejected the application. Police is likely to take him to Sabarmati Central Jail and then to Jodhpur in Rajasthan,” said Kodekar.
An SIT officer supervising the case said, “We had requested the court to send Asaram to Nadiad sub-jail only, but his lawyer objected to it. We still want the accused to be shifted to Nadiad for his safety. After the hearing finishes in the Jodhpur case, he will be brought back to Gujarat. We will push for his stay in Nadiad sub-jail.”
The 72-year-old was brought to the city last week on a transit remand from a court in Jodhpur and thereafter, quizzed extensively during the two batches of seven-day remand granted by the magisterial court.
