The Jaipur Municipal Corporation (JMC) approved its annual budget of Rs1,015 crore for the fiscal year 2013-14 during its 16th general body meeting (GBM) held on Tuesday.
However, 34 councillors preferred to skip the important meeting. The meeting started with the budget speech of mayor Jyoti Khandelwal, followed by the debate among the councillors from both parties – BJP and Congress.
As the councillors were not expecting that the meeting will run longer due to heated discussions, so many of them started leaving the house gradually. By the time the budget was tabled for approval in late evening, only 43 councillors were present, who approved it. Deputy mayor Manish Pareek alleged the mayor did nothing to improve civic amenities in Jaipur and whatever achievements she speaks of belong to either JDA or the state government.
Meanwhile, the GBM once again witnessed unruly scenes with councillors hurling accusations on each other in foul language. The meeting got unruly when the mayor reading out the budget speech and referring to the works done during her tenure, a drive against corruption.
While reading the speech, she blamed the nexus of officers and contractors during the tenure of last board (led by BJP mayors) for the corruption.
