Over 2.5 lakh new voters added in electoral list in 20 days

Mass enthusiasm of voters in Rajasthan assembly election makes people more literate using their voting rights. Over the period of 20 days between December 16 and January 7, more than 2.5 lakh people in Jaipur district applied to get their names registered in electoral rolls. As 1.42 lakh forms have already been accepted, 1.05 lakh are pending for checking of documents and 2,500 have been rejected till Thursday.

As far as youths are concerned, over 51,200 applications received so far were filed by those in the age bracket of 18 to 19 years. Till Thursday, the district administration accepted more than 15,150 forms filed by those between 18 to 19 years.

In fact, the special camps organized by the district administration saw a huge footfall. The camps were organized on December 22, 29 and January 5 at booth-level. “Our booth-level officers sat at their polling booths and accepted the form for addition of names in the voters list,” deputy district election officer Tikam Chand Bohra said.

Between the 2008 and 2013 assembly elections, only 3.75 lakh voters were added in Jaipur district, but in less than a month, over 2.5 lakh applicants applied for adding their names in the electoral rolls. Jaipur district witnessed a record voting in assembly elections as 72% of the total 39.11 lakh eligible voters turned out to vote in 19 constituencies.

Now for Jaipurites, voting day is not a holiday, instead they go out and vote to take part in the formation of the government. In the assembly elections, the Jaipur district saw a 10.45% increase in voting percentage compared to 2008 assembly elections. It witnessed an increase of 11.46% in female voting while for male the increase was 9.57%.

The highest number of forms for addition of names in the voters list was filed in Vidhyadhar Nagar constituency. More than 32,600 applicants filed to get their names registered in electoral rolls, in Sanganer 30,000, Jhotwara 22,360 and Hawa Mahal more than 21,400 applications were received. “Those who have missed out on the opportunity can apply at electoral registration officer before filing of nominations for contesting in the elections,” Bohra said.
