Union minister Porika Balram Naik today urged the Congress to field at least four candidates from the Banjara community in the December 1 Assembly polls in Rajasthan.
Naik, the Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, said the state has a nomadic population of 30 lakhs and, of them, nine lakhs are voters.
“I have requested Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot to consider fielding candidates from Banjara samaj in Ramganjmandi, Pali, Bayanan and Chaksu Assembly constituencies,” Naik said at a press conference here.
“I will also take up this demand with party president Sonia Gandhi as people from Banjara community and other nomadic castes are still most backward,” he said, adding the community has also raised a similar demand in Madhya Pradesh, which is also going to polls.
Congress has never offered any poll ticket to Banjaras in Rajasthan before, he added.
