Rajasthan will elect a new Assembly in a single phase poll. The voting will take place on December 1 and counting will be on December 8. Rajasthan has a total of 200 seats in the state assembly. In the previous election in 2008, the Congress had won a majority of 96 seats giving a major blow to the Vasundhara Raje Scindia led Bhartaiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state. While the BJP had been restricted to 78 seats, independents won 14 followed by 6 seats by the BSP, 3 by CPM and 1 each by LSP and JDU.
In what is being seen as a ‘do or die’ battle for the BJP and the Congress, both the parties are fighting it hard to attain majority of the seats in the Assembly polls. However, Gehlot is facing rebellion within the party with Union minister CP Joshi who lost the CM post to Gehlot in 2008, trying to make a comeback. A series of sex scandals of his cabinet colleagues has also caused an uproar in the state. Gehlot is preparing to go to the polls with a development agenda. He claimed that his government has delivered on most issues and has rubbished the allegations of corruption as baseless.
