Chaos ruled the inauguration ceremony of Transport Nagar underpass. Chief minister AshokGehlot who inaugurated the underpass was forced to make several halts to meet people as a large number had gathered for the event. Moreover, after the tunnel was inaugurated pedestrians in large numbers entered the underpass along with traffic which caused possibilities of accidents.
The Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) officials claimed the project will reduce the traffic congestion in the area and will provide a safe passage to two-wheeler’s and slow moving traffic to reach Agra Road via Ghat Ki Guni.
However, it has been learnt that the project which was started seven years ago has little utility today. In the current scenario, it would benefit just the two-wheelers who are allowed to pass the Ghat Ki Guni passage on the Jaipur-Agra highway. Others vehicles headed towards the highway from the city are diverted through the tunnel that was inaugurated by UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi in January this year.
The underpass demonstrates lack of planning and vision of the JDA officials, as the project’s aim has already been accomplished by the tunnel. The project was launched on October 30, 2006.
An official source said, “Diverting the heavy vehicles, cars and jeeps to Ghat Ki Guni tunnel will render the Transport Nagar underpass non-functional. The Transport Nagar underpass constructed at a cost of Rs 33 crore was planned to reduce congestion in the area. Now, only two-wheelers and slow moving traffic will use the underpass. Its use has been minimized and investment is a complete waste”.
