First indigenously designed and manufactured coaches for the Jaipur Metro were rolled out from the Bharat Earth Movers Limited, Bangalore late on Monday night. The coaches are expected to arrive in Jaipur by May 20.
Jaipur Metro Rail Corporation (JMRC) chief managing director, N C Goel claimed that this is the first time when coaches for a Metro train are being indigenously manufactured. In the past, Metro coaches have been manufactured with foreign collaboration.
A DMRC official said, “Once the delivery of rolling stock is received in the stabling yard in Mansarovar, the signaling work will start.”
Initially, one rake (line of wagons) of Metro train would be brought to Jaipur in May and these will be tested at the stabling yard, which is under construction. “These rakes will be coupled (joined) in the stabling yard and it will take at least a month to complete basic testing,” an official said.
The official explained that the rake will undergo several safety tests by technical experts to ensure the system is foolproof.
In case the driver fails to respond to warnings, the system will apply the brakes on its own. It will also take into account the speed and position of the train relative to the end of its ‘movement authority’ in issuing warnings and applying brakes.
The system is reliable as the display time is fixed in the control room of different trains. If one train gets delayed, the time in another automatically gets adjusted.
The Jaipur Metro in its first phase will come up with four coaches on the 9.5 km route. In this phase, the Jaipur Metro Rail Corporation (JMRC) will procure 10 trains. “Like Delhi Metro, Jaipur too will start with four coaches and switch to six coaches later as the traffic increases,” an official added.
The decision to start the train with four coaches was made after analyzing the traffic statistics and estimation of commuters expected at various Metro stations. For passenger convenience, two tracks will be laid with trains running every seven minutes. However, at the peak hour the gap will be reduced to five minutes.
