Rajasthan University is introducing first-of-its-kind compulsory ‘Orientation Sessions’ by experts in Maharani Girls College to educate students on different ways to counter eve-teasing and avert untoward incidents.
The university is also setting up a counseling centre for girls facing problems. The move is aimed at instilling confidence among girls and parents who are in fear due to rising incidents of rape cases.
Divulging details of the orientation sessions, Vidhya Jain, principal of the college, said, “It will have tentative modules on how to safeguard accounts in social networking sites, educating them on tools like various helpline numbers and a list of dos and don’ts.”
Despite the nation-wide outage after Nirbhaya case, she added, the continuing incidents of rape have created a sense of fear among girl students.
“This is our duty to make them feel confident in and outside campus. These sessions will be introduced in the beginning of the academic session,” said Jain adding that vice-chancellor Madhukar Gupta has assured them all possible help.
The college has decided to take the services of expert counselors. The entry of males is under the scanner now as they have to compulsorily register their entry.
Since the Delhi rape case has happened, girls have become more vocal on the harassments faced by them. This is the biggest college in India in terms of number of students (8,000 students) and close to 40% of the girls come from outside.
Jain said that such efforts are very necessary as many parents are very apprehensive of sending their daughters outside for education.
