Acting on a tip-off, Rajasthan University officials busted a racket facilitating illegal stay of girls in Kasturba Hostel on Monday during a surprise check.

At least 64 girls were living illegally for the past few years and availing all hostel facilities in connivance with the hostel warden Vandana Kalla, who was suspended with immediate effect. Shockingly, majority of these girls were not even enrolled in any programme of university.

“Preliminary reports say that these girls had occupied 30 rooms at the cost of other deserving candidates as guests. However, university has no such provision to provide hostel rooms to guests. Some of them had not paid even a single penny and have dues ranging from Rs 5,000 to Rs 30, 000,” said RU VC Madhukar Gupta. RU has constituted a five-member committee including teachers like Z D Sharma (chief warden, girls), Kshama Agarwal, Som Dutta, Vineta Sareen and Sangeeta Sharma to investigate the matter.

The matter came as an embarrassment for the university as seats in girls hostels always fall short of the number of candidates. It has also raised a question on the security of other girls as none of the illegally living girls have Id proof showing they are hostellers or RU students.

Sources said that these girls used their influence to avail hostel rooms as most of them have submitted desires of political leaders and university teachers to stay in the hostels. University officials are suspecting that similar illegal occupants will be there in other hostels of both boys and girls. The University has sealed the rooms and are compiling a list of illegal occupants to file a police complaint.

The matter came to the light after the VC’s office received a tip-off on illegal stay. The office quickly acted on the information and raided the hostel. In fact, many girls find the hostels easy stay as they enroll in any masters’ degree course and continue with their jobs. Sources said that there are hundreds of girls availing hostel facility while enrolling in any programme to stay in hostel and working in private companies. “Those girls who are pursuing Masters degree twice are under scanner. The officials will be checking their attendance in their department and in hostels to crack down on these dummy hostellers,” said a source.
