As the student union elections draw near, the civic bodies have geared up against student leaders planning to deface the city with posters, banners, pamphlets and other election campaigning material. Acting on the state government’s order to deal with these students strictly, the JMC administration has registered FIRs with various police stations in the city, including Gandhi Nagar against student leaders under Rajasthan Prevention of Defacement of Property Act (RPDPA).

A police officer said that over 15 FIRs have been registered with the police. Investigation into these cases is undergoing. Earlier, no major action was taken against the student leaders by the civic bodies. The university administration claims that they have limited role to play in what happens outside the campus while police claims they were waiting for FIRs to be filed.

“Anything that happens outside the university boundaries is not in our jurisdiction. But we have curbed it down inside the campus. Unions have been apprised that campus beauty is paramount and pasting posters on walls will not be tolerated. If the local administration registers any cases against students under RPDPA, we will take action,” said a university official.

The civic bodies plan to take action. “We will not compromise with the city’s beauty. Our teams have been deployed and they are removing all banners and posters. We have also lodged FIRs at various city police stations,” said a police officer.

The JLN Marg along RU, the Rajasthan College and Commerce College and the roads leading to the Maharaja’s and the Maharani’s colleges are littered with pamphlets and posters even on the day when the poll code of conduct is in force.
