Professor Dev Swarup has taken over charge of vice-chancellor of the University of Rajasthan on Wednesday afternoon.

Sharing his priorities with the media, the newly appointed VC said, “RU has a huge potential for research activities. The university has a great reputation in academics and our effort will be to bring it among the top varsities in the country.”

Swarup succeeded Madhukar Gupta, divisional commissioner of Jaipur, who was appointed as the acting VC. After he took charge, Swarup held several meetings with the faculty, head of departments, administrative heads and took the feedback. “I will prepare my action plan after taking feedback from all academic and administrative departments,” Swarup said.

The new VC has inherited several issues, including delay in results, recruitments, teachers’ politics, students’ union elections and to free university land from encroachments. Swarup, however, has refused to talk on any of the issues, saying he’ll take feedback first.

His forthcoming challenge is to hold the students’ union elections in the light of Lyngdoh Committee recommendations. Swarup has huge experience in higher education. He held membership in several committees on higher education in the 12th five year plan. He has presented papers on ‘Social Work Education: Contemporary Concerns and Challenges’, Concept of area studies in Indian universities, Celebrating 50 years of Swarnim Gujarat are some to name a few.
