Tension broke out in Luniyawas village on Jaipur outskirts after a youth allegedly tried to rape a 14-year-old girl, who belonged to a different community.

The villagers managed to nab the culprit and hand him over to the police. However, as the Kho Nagorian police station doesn’t have a lock-up, the personnel took the accused to the Kanota police station.

In the meantime, villagers and relatives of the girl who had gathered outside the police station believed that the police were releasing him after taking him away from the village. In no time, tension mounted and violence erupted. The villagers then pelted stones at the police station, damaging one police jeep, and an SUV that belonged to the accused.

According to the FIR registered with the Kho Nagorian police station, the girl was on her way to a coaching institute when one Ramphool (20) forced her into his car and attempted to kidnap and rape her. The girl is a student of class 10.

“Two to three youths, who were relatives of the girl, saw her being forced into the car and started chasing the vehicle. After a 3km chase, they managed to stop the car and caught the youth,” said SHO, Kho Nagorian, Jitendra Singh.

The officer said when accused was taken to the police station, a crowd of villagers and relatives of the girl had gathered there.

Police claimed that Ramphool was immediately booked under charges of attempt to rape and kidnap, and was arrested.

“As the police station doesn’t have a lock-up, we were shifting Ramphool to Kanota police station. However, the villagers thought that we were releasing him. A few of them started hurling stones at the police station,” the officer said.

The SHO, too, sustained minor injuries during the violence. Police said the villagers were informed that the accused had been arrested.

Additional force from at least three nearby police stations was rushed to the spot. Extra force was deployed in the area to prevent a further deterioration of law and order. The accused and the minor victim belong to different communities.

“We are recording the victim’s statement. A medical examination has also been conducted. Ramphool will be produced in a court on Monday,” the officer said.
