Rajasthan will control tobacco by vision 2025

The state government will prepare vision 2025 for tobacco control. The decision was taken in a meeting of state-level coordination committee (SLCC) held on Friday. It was headed by the additional chief secretary, forest and environment, OP Meena. Officials from various departments attended the meeting.

Meena warned dairy owners of strict action if found selling tobacco products.

A workshop will be conducted for Vision 2025 and ways to control sale and production of tobacco products and implement cigarettes and other tobacco products act (COTPA) will be discussed.

“We have already sent a proposal to the department of personnel (DOP) for demanding undertaking from the candidates who will join government services for not consuming tobacco products,” a health department official said.

Meena directed the participants to ensure proper implementation of COTPA in the state. He added that boards warning against smoking and its ill-effects should be put up at public places like railway stations and bus stands.

He also directed the officials to challan those who violate the act.

National rural health mission (NRHM), director, Gayatri Rathore said the health department has stepped up efforts for implementing COTPA with the help of NGOs.

She also said that Rajasthan is the first state which has constituted a SLCC for tobacco control.

State tobacco control, nodal officer Dr Sunil Singh said Bloomberg Global Initiative for Tobacco Control from USA will visit the state to inspect measures taken in various cities in the state.

Additional chief secretary forest and environment OP Meena headed the meeting, which issued warning to dairy owners of strict action for selling tobacco products.

A health department official said that vision 2025 will be prepared. For that a workshop will be conducts and suggestions will be taken to control sale and production of tobacco products and how to implement Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) in the state effectively.

In the meeting it was discussed that the proposal for taking undertaking from the persons joining government jobs for not consuming tobacco products is in the process. The official said that they have already sent the proposal to department of personnel (DOP) for demanding undertaking from the candidates who will join government services for not consuming tobacco products.

Meena directed the officials taking part in the meeting belonged to various government departments to ensure proper implementation of COTPA should be in the state. He said that boards of warning of no smoking area and ill effects of smoking and other tobacco products consumption should be set up at public places like railway station and bus stand.

Also, he directed the officials to challan the violators of COTPA in the state.
