Rajasthan Royals beat Indian Premier League champions Mumbai Indians in the first group game in the Champions League T20 proper in Jaipur.

A calm 54 from wicket-keeper Sanju Samson, coupled with contributions from Ajinkya Rahane, Shane Watson and Stuart Binny saw the Royals home in the final over.

It was a closely-contested run chase, but the home side were always just about in front, despite losing their captain Rahul Dravid in Nathan Coulter-Nile’s first over.

Rahane and Samson added 74 in 59 balls following Dravid’s dismissal and weren’t unduly troubled by the Mumbai bowlers. Rishi Dhawan was the pick of the attack, returning figures of one for 17 from four overs of medium-pace, whereas Pragyan Ojha (13 runs off a single over) and Mitchell Johnson (none for 38 off four) were expensive.

Rahane was bowled by Dhawan when on 33, but Shane Watson joined Samson and stayed with him until the latter departed for 54 off the bowling of Kieron Pollard. Stuart Binny then entered the fray and hastened the match to its conclusion, finishing it off with a six in the final over.

Mumbai had earlier slumped to 43 for four in the ninth over after being asked to bat by Dravid. Vikramjeet Malik dispensed with Dwayne Smith (9) and Dinesh Karthik (2) en route to figures of three for 34, while Stuart Binny got the prized wicket of Sachin Tendulkar for 15.

Captain Rohit Sharma then led a recovery, adding 52 with Kieron Pollard for the fifth-wicket. He fell for 44, but Pollard remained until the final over and hit 42 off 36 balls to haul Mumbai up to 142 for seven.

Besides Malik, Watson (3-26-1) and James Faulkner (4-31-0) both bowled tidily, while Ashok Menaria (0-9), Rahul Shukla (0-6) and Binny (1-13) delivered tidy two-over bursts.
