The next time you travel in a Rajasthan State Roadways Transport Corporation (RSRTC) bus, chances are a female conductor will ask you to show the ticket.

Breaking into a male bastion, 148 women bus conductors have been selected as conductors for RSRTC-run buses. Joining the league of states like Delhi, Gujarat and Kerala, Rajasthan too will one of the first states to induct women into bus services.

The officials have already assigned the candidates their concerned depots where they have started reporting to work.

Of the 487 candidates recruited by the corporation for the posts of bus conductor on June 16, 148 are women who will be deputed at bus depots across the state.

A few years ago, when women were given jobs by the corporation on compassionate grounds, most sought non-field postings.

The corporation, keeping in mind the earlier trend, has told the candidates that field postings will not be changed to non-field postings, irrespective of the gender.

The corporation, though, is upbeat about the increase in the applications by female candidates. “This is a new trend where women have applied for the post of a conductor. In the past women would opt for postings, in case they were deputed on-field. This time the scenario is different as 148 is a huge number and so many of them can’t deny to work as conductors after joining,” Naresh Pal Gangwar, chairman and managing director (CMD), RSRTC told TOI on Wednesday.

RSRTC sources said that women from almost every part of the state including Dholpur, Khetri (Jhunjhunu), Shahpura (Jaipur), Jhalawar, Alwar, Bikaner, Karauli, Bundi, Kota, Hindaun, Bhilwara, Srimadhopur (Sikar) have made it to the list of successful candidates.

For the selection, the candidates had appeared in a written test in March-April, 2013. Matriculation is the minimum qualification to be eligible to apply for the post.

Women recruits seemed excited to join the service as bus conductors. “We have women bus conductors in Delhi, Gujarat and southern parts of India, why can’t it happen in Rajasthan. I am excited to join this service,” said Sunita Kumar, a successful candidate from Dholpur.
