The NDA government on Tuesday named governors for four states, sending former UP chief minister Kalyan Singh to Rajasthan, Gujarat assembly speaker Vajubhai Vala to Karnataka, former minister of state in Vajpayee government C Vidyasagar Rao to Maharashtra and former BJP Mahila Morcha president Mridula Sinha to Goa.

Sources in the government also told that Kerala governor Sheila Dikshit may resign in a day or two. An indication to this effect was given by her in her meeting with Union home minister Rajnath Singh on Monday.

While the vacancy in Maharashtra arose following the resignation of K Sankaranarayanan after he declined the transfer to Mizoram, Goa fell vacant following the resignation of BV Wanchoo in June. The vacancies in Rajasthan and Karnataka followed completion of tenures of UPA appointees Margaret Alva and HR Bhardwaj respectively.

The other three names — Vajubhai Vala, Mridula Sinha and Vidyasagar Rai — have seemingly scored over other probables like Lalji Tandon and VK Malhotra. Sources indicated that Tandon and Malhotra may no longer figure high on the priority list of the government for governorships.
