Asia Pacific largest literary fest, Jaipur Literature Festival in its seventh edition will see some big names from Hollywood and Bollywod this year. One of the world’s largest free literary festival, got rolling yesterday with the announcement of the dates and the names of the participating authors. The DSC Jaipur Literature Festival 2014 will be held from 17-21 January 2014, at the same venue – Diggi Palace.

As every year, this year too Jaipur will see Pulitzer Prize winners, academics from the world’s leading universities, as well as authors shortlisted for this year’s Man Booker Prize and DSC Prize for South Asian Literature exploring its lanes as they come for the fest.

Interestingly, this year, representing Bollywood on the dais will be actor Irrfan, along with Sabrina Dhawan, the screenwriter for Monsoon Wedding. Hollywood actor Rupert Everett will also be there for the fest, as will Olympic bronze medallist boxer, Mary Kom, whose autobiography will be published next year. That apart, the organizers have an impressive lineup of both foreign as well as Indian writers.

The themes and genres for the 2014 edition also has sessions called Crime and Punishment, which will dissect and discuss Bollywood villains, vendetta and the shadow lines between the good guys and the bad.

Festival co-director, Namita Gokhale, said in a statement, “Come January, a cloud of creative energies gathers around Jaipur. Writers and thinkers from South Asia and around the world will once again debate and attempt to make sense of our changing worlds through the prism of literature.”

“As readers from around the world get ready for their annual literary pilgrimage, the Jaipur yatra will continue to celebrate books and ideas, readers and writers in an open, joyous and spontaneous space, and to uphold the spirit of democratic dialogue and exchange,” she added.

Festival co-director William Dalrymple said, “In less than a decade Jaipur has become the largest free literature festival in the world, and the largest litfest in the Asia-Pacific region. It has done this by consistently bringing together at Jaipur the greatest literary minds on earth and presenting them to the public, rich and poor, young and old, desi and firangi, completely free of charge. But never have we fielded a lineup like this year, a gathering of the greatest artists in fiction and non-fiction the world has to offer, supported by swathes of Princeton, Harvard and Oxbridge faculty. It’s going to be an extraordinary few days.”
