In a massive blow to the Indian Premier League (IPL) and BCCI, the three member committee, appointed by the Supreme Court headed by formed CJI R M Lodha, served a two year suspension to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals from participation in the IPL.

The committee on Tuesday also imposed sanctions on Gurunath Meiyappan, and Raj Kundra who were the face of these IPL franchises respectively and were found to have indulged in betting activities. It declared them ineligible for participation from cricket activities for life.

The committee has stressed that the betting activities of these individuals had brought the game of cricket, BCCI and IPL into disrepute.

On the issue of whether the committee has looked into taking any action against IPL COO Sundar Raman, Justice Lodha said that the committee had examined the material and it believes this requires further investigation.

Asked whether the committee took a view on the impact of the ruling on the players of the two franchises, he said, “Players will not be attached to a franchisee which has been suspended. We thought that if cricket is bigger than individuals then financial loss to players and franchises is not of significance.”
