This Diwali, when you purchase sweets, you will see something special. The Election Commission, in a move to sensitize people, would paste stickers urging them to use their voting rights on boxes of sweets. Not only that, the EC is also planning to send the message via LPG gas, e-mitra centres, water and electricity bills. The campaign is already on in some districts while it will gain momentum in other places in the next few days.

In some districts like Tonk, Ajmer, Sawai Madhopur and Bharatpur, the sweet caterers have already got the stickers which are being pasted on boxes. Messages like “Apni Zimmedari Poori Karen, Apne Adhikar Ka Prayog Karen,” would also be seen on electricity bills, water bills and even phone bills.

In Jaipur, some sweet caterers have consented to do so as during Diwali and they will put these stickers on the sweet box.

“There is no harm in it. Whenever we get these stickers from the concerned authorities we will certainly paste them in public interest,” said Ramesh Natani, who owns a famous sweet shop in the city.

“This campaign would certainly gain momentum in the coming month where through street plays, folk music and other means, new voters would be sensitized,” said Ashok Jain, chief electoral officer, Rajasthan said while talking to TOI on Sunday.

According to sources, the district administration in various places have also spoken to the primary health centres, satellite hospitals and medical colleges to get the message printed in registration slips.

In some districts, the concerned district officials have also asked famous grocery stores to distribute one pamphlet to its customer on every purchase.
