As search for the replacement of Rajasthan BJP chief Arun Chaturvedi whose term is about to complete has picked up steam, central leadership has recently summoned former Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, senior legislators Gulab Chand Kataria and Ghanshayam Tiwari in New Delhi. They met leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley late on Saturday night.

Though Kataria and Tiwari had a joint meeting with Jaitley, Raje called on him separately. According to sources, efforts are being made to bring consensus on new party president, ahead of the State Assembly elections.

Sources said that there was near unanimity that a senior leader, who is not ambitious to become Chief Minister in the event of party getting majority in the Assembly elections, should head the party.

Raje and her camp wanted that she should be projected a chief ministerial candidate and be given due weightage while selecting of party candidates. Both Kataria and Tiwari are among those party leaders, who are considered to be potential chief ministerial candidates in the event of party coming to power.

According to party sources, search of new party chief was initiated after getting feedback from in-charge of party affairs in Rajasthan Kaptan Singh Solanki and national secretary Bhupedner Yadav, who were here last week.

Central leadership wants a new State party president acceptable to both factions.During his visit to Rajasthan last week, Solanki had said Raje would be party’s face in the coming Assembly elections, but selection of new Chief Minister would be done only by the elected party legislators.

He defended Raje’s feedback exercise from the district party leaders. Last week, leaders of several districts were asked to come to Dhaulpur, where Raje was camping. Solanki said that this kind of exercise would help the party in selection of party candidates.

However, some leaders, including State party president Chaturvedi, are of the view that the exercise should have been done in Jaipur and other state party leaders been involved in it.
