On World Tourism Day, there’s some news to cheer on monument conservation in the state.

The state government has approved a budget of Rs 2 crore each for six forts, which have recently been declared World Heritage Sites by the UNESCO. This amount has been allotted for the promotion and conservation of these forts. Along with this, the state has also given directions to the authorities concerned to appoint a manager for each of the World Heritage sites.

This was decided in an apex committee meeting chaired by chief secretary C K Mathew. Here, they also agreed on forming a district level committee headed by the collector. It was determined that the site managers will be responsible for coordinating with all the agencies concerned to undertake conservation of these forts.

Drona coordinator Shikha Jain, who had also participated in the meeting, said the state government has start the process to prepare a conservation plan for the six forts namely Jaisalmer, Chittorgarh, Kumbhalgarh, Amber, Gagaron and Ranthambore as per the world heritage site notes. The conservation progress report has to be submitted to UNESCO by 2015.

Jain also said the risk management plan for these forts is being prepared on priority basis. Also, departments concerned have been directed to prepare a tourist management strategy.

She said during the meeting the chief secretary also asked the committee to expedite the conservation process at Jaisalmer, Kumbhalgarh and Ranthambhore forts to help Rajasthan Urban Infrastructure Development Project (RUIDP) complete the underground sewage line by January 2015.

The Drona coordinator also expects an increase in the number of tourists with the inclusion of these six forts in world heritage sites.
